The gemstone question
The oldest Indian chapter on gemstones is a guide to not being cheated when you buy one, and the modern prescription of a single stone for a single planet rests on specifications nobody can source.
This is the short way in. The essay has the working, the sources and the sky.
Around the sixth century Varahamihira gave gems a chapter of his handbook the Brihat Samhita. Nikhil Verma opens with what is in it. Where two dozen stones come from, how to spot a bad one, what each should cost, priced by weight in grains of rice. Its anxiety is fraud. A buyer's manual, not a prescription pad.
Now set that beside a shop today. The navaratna, nine stones for the nine grahas, is genuinely old: ruby for the sun, pearl for the moon, coral for Mars. The point is that it is a set. All nine worn together, the whole sky at once. Nobody is being sorted.
What gets sold now is different. One stone, for one planet, at a minimum carat weight, in a named metal, on a named finger, first worn on a named day, sometimes with a later re-energising fee. Each item can be asked the same question. Which text, and which chapter.
The reasoning sounds like engineering, which is why it persuades: a planet is weak, its stone supplies the strength, so wear it. But the tradition has never settled whether that is the right move. Some hold you strengthen what is weak. Others hold you must never strengthen a planet ruling a difficult part of a chart: that feeds the wrong thing. Between those positions there is no chart for which some stone cannot be justified. A rule that returns a purchase for every input is a menu, not a diagnosis.
Two things to carry into a shop. Weight: price per carat climbs steeply with size, because large clean crystals are far scarcer. Raising the minimum by one carat raises the bill by far more than it looks. Paper: a laboratory report states what a stone is, natural or synthetic, treated or not. It never says the stone works; no laboratory has a test for that.
Verma is not against jewellery. Buying a beautiful object because it is beautiful is a clean transaction. The objection is to the sequence: frighten, diagnose, prescribe, sell, with the same person paid at more than one step.
Words decoded
- graha (ग्रह)
- "planet" in this system: the sun, the moon, the five planets visible without a telescope, and two shadow points
- navaratna (नवरत्न)
- "nine gems", a traditional ornament set with one stone for each graha, worn as a complete set
- Brihat Samhita (बृहत् संहिता)
- a sixth century Sanskrit handbook by the astronomer and astrologer Varahamihira; its eightieth chapter is the one on gems
- carat
- the unit gems are weighed in, proposed in Paris in 1907 at 200 milligrams and in general use soon after; before that at least twenty-three competing carats were around
- laboratory report
- a document stating what a stone is (species, variety, natural or synthetic, treatments, weight), which is not the same as a valuation and not a statement that the stone works
