Corrections

Corrections are part of the product here. We will get things wrong, and this page says what we do about it. The rule underneath everything below: a correction is never made silently. If a sentence changes meaning, the page says so, and says when.

What counts as an error

Any of these, and we want to hear about all of them.

- A wrong fact. A date, a number, a name, a place, an astronomy figure, a historical claim. - A wrong source. A verse attributed to the wrong text, a chapter reference that does not hold, a paraphrase that does not survive a look at the original. - A wrong calculation. An arithmetic slip, a step out of order, a result that does not reproduce when you work it yourself. - A missing convention. A number printed without the ayanamsha, house system, ephemeris, or panchang it depends on. On its own that number cannot be checked, which makes it useless rather than merely incomplete. - A broken rule. If a post predicts a specific event, frightens a reader, recommends a remedy for sale, or blurs computation into opinion, it has broken The Bhagol Standard. We treat that as an error of the same order as a wrong date, and sometimes a worse one. - A misquotation of another writer or another practitioner.

Two things that are not errors, though we are still glad to hear them.

A judgment you disagree with is not an error. Where a writer here says "I think", that sentence is opinion, marked as opinion, and open to argument. We may print your argument. We will not print a correction to it, because there is nothing factually to correct.

A conclusion you dislike is not an error either. If the evidence changes, the post changes. If it does not, it does not.

How to report one

Please include, as far as you can:

1. The page, by title or link.
2. The sentence, quoted, so we are both looking at the same words.
3. What is wrong with it.
4. A source, if you have one. A chapter, an edition, a paper, a table. This is not a condition; a source only makes the check faster.

What happens when we agree

The post is corrected, and the correction carries a dated note on the post itself saying what changed and when. Anything that changed meaning keeps its note permanently. A typo or a broken link is repaired without ceremony.

If the error came from a source we trusted, the note says that too, and names the better source.

What happens when we do not agree

We say why, to you, with the working or the citation that convinced us. Being disagreed with by a reader who took the trouble to write is not an annoyance; it is the system operating.

If the disagreement is about a judgment rather than a fact, we may publish the exchange, with your permission, because a good argument is worth more to readers than a quiet inbox.

Why this page exists

A publication that cannot admit error in public will eventually stop noticing error in private. Every essay here asks readers to check claims, verify sources, and redo arithmetic. It would be strange to ask that and then flinch when somebody does it to us.
