He does the sums in the open. India has about 1.45 billion people and roughly 16 births a year per 1,000 people, which works out at about 55 births a minute across the whole country. He rounds the rate up to 20 on purpose, because a bigger number makes his own point weaker. Even then, once you narrow from the whole country to one city and one date and one minute, the crowd disappears.

Researchers in the United States found something similar without even using a time of birth. Latanya Sweeney worked with 1990 census data and reported in 2000 that three plain facts, sex, postal code and full date of birth, were probably enough to pick out 87 of every 100 Americans as one particular person. Philippe Golle repeated the work with newer census figures in 2006 and got 63 in every 100, and said honestly that he could not explain the difference. Either way, a few plain facts identify most of a country. A birth time recorded to the minute cuts those groups into as many as 1,440 smaller pieces.

That is why the free birth chart on so many astrology sites asks for a date, a time and a place, and then for a name, a sex and a phone number, which no calculation needs. The chart really is free and really is a chart. The record left behind is the point, and the most revealing thing in it is not the chart at all. It is the reason you came: a marriage, a child, an illness, money you are worried about.

Indian law does not treat any of that as special: the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 has no separate category for sensitive information.

So the blog collects an email address if you subscribe, and nothing else. No account, no password, no chart form. When the company builds its chart tool, it will ask for three fields and no more, in a separate part of the site with its own written terms, published before the first field goes live, and deletion on request. He will not invent the details he has not decided yet, such as how many days a deletion takes.
