The mangal dosha panic

Mangal dosha is a rule families use when arranging marriages. Mangal is Mars, a planet; dosha means flaw. A birth chart maps where the planets stood at your exact time and place of birth, sliced into twelve compartments called houses. If Mars lands in certain houses the person is labelled manglik, and the marriage, or the spouse in it, is held to be in danger.

Which houses? Most lists name six of the twelve. Some drop one. Many practitioners run the count again from the moon, and parts of south India add a third starting point, Venus. Verma treats that disagreement as the first fact about the rule, not a footnote. An instrument whose sources cannot agree on its own scale is not a precise instrument.

Then the arithmetic. Which house Mars falls into depends almost entirely on your time of birth, because the chart's starting point, the lagna, sweeps around the zodiac every day. Spread a large population across all hours of the clock and Mars lands in each of the twelve houses about equally often. Six of twelve is close to half of everybody. Adding the moon and Venus as extra checks only catches more people, since a second test never releases anyone the first caught.

The same tradition supplies a long list of cancellations: Mars in its own sign, Mars with Jupiter, both partners flagged so the two cancel. Every experienced practitioner knows them. What Verma watches is the order of disclosure. The flag arrives in the first conversation, before money is mentioned. The cancellations arrive later, sometimes after a family has already broken off a match. No text prescribes that order.

He will not quote a percentage he cannot source, and has found no survey he trusts. He does note who the sales pages address. The rite meant to fix the flag, a symbolic marriage called kumbha vivaha, is sold to the bride's family and written as if the flaw were always hers. Matrimonial sites now exist built entirely on the cancellation that pairs two flagged people: the escape clause has become a product category.
