Bhakoot, the quiet veto

Bhakoot is a marriage-matching rule worth seven of thirty-six points that gives a couple everything or nothing depending on the gap between their two moon signs, and its famous escape clause is really another part of the same score being counted a second time.

Most people first hear the word bhakoot after a match has already been refused, in a sentence like "the horoscopes were seen, there was some bhakoot problem". The rule is heavy enough to end the conversation and quiet enough that nobody in the room has ever looked it up.

Before many Indian marriages, two families have the birth details of the boy and the girl compared. The comparison has eight parts and produces a score out of thirty-six. The seventh part is called bhakoot, and it is worth seven points.

Bhakoot uses one fact about each person: their moon sign. The sky is divided into twelve signs, and your moon sign is the one the moon was in when you were born. Bhakoot measures the gap between the two signs. Three gaps score zero. Every other gap scores the full seven. There is nothing in between.

The three failing gaps each have a claim attached. Signs next door to each other are said to bring money trouble. Signs five apart are said to concern children. Signs six apart, the one usually called worst, is said to bring illness and quarrels.

There is a way out. If the same planet owns both signs, the zero is cancelled. If the two owner planets are friends on a fixed table of planetary friendships, it is cancelled or softened.

Nikhil Verma's point is that the second escape is not extra information. Whether those two planets are friends is already the fifth part of the same eight-part score, worth five points, judged from the same table. So one comparison between two planets controls twelve of the thirty-six points. Friendly planets earn a couple five points and cancel a seven-point defect. Unfriendly planets cost them both.

He also shows an older southern version of the same test, translated into English in 1917. There every gap had a direction: bad one way round and good the other. The modern version keeps three gaps, drops the direction, and answers seven or zero.

Why does nobody know the word? Because it is not sold to the person it lands on. Fears like kaal sarp have to reach the frightened person, so they need names, temples and advertising. Bhakoot is supplied to the family doing the choosing, before the two people have even met. A veto needs no publicity, only availability, and every matching website computes this one free.
