When to stop the session

People pay an astrologer for an hour of attention. Sometimes that hour turns into something else, and it turns in the same order. The example sentences in the essay are made up, and the author says so. What repeats is the order.

It starts as a reading. The astrologer describes a stretch of time: the next eight or nine months look like a period for holding on to what you have. Agree with it or ignore it. Either way you can carry it home, and it costs nothing more.

Then the sentence changes shape. Now there is a defect, and it is affecting everything. A stretch of time has an ending built into it. A defect does not, and it is said to be inside you. In one breath you have gone from a person living through a hard few months to a person with a condition.

Next comes relief. Something can be done about it, but it has to be done properly. That good news only feels good because of the bad news thirty seconds earlier, from the same person.

Then a price, usually with a date attached. The date is the part that does the work. It takes away the night you would have slept on the decision.

Two more sentences can turn up at any point, and they are the heaviest ones. Do not tell your family. And: whoever you went to before did not see this. Neither argues with your judgement. They remove the people you would normally check with.

The essay offers one test. There is information you can take home, and there is fear you have to pay to put down. Information still works in the car park and survives a second opinion. The other kind can only be lifted by buying something from the person who handed it to you.

Discomfort is not the sign. An honest hour can be uncomfortable. The sign is whether relief is on sale.

Leaving is simpler than it feels. Do not argue about whether the defect is real, because arguing keeps you in the chair. Pay the whole fee, the cheapest way out, and say one plain sentence: I am going to stop here.
